There are many companies on the Internet that only want to steal your money. Some of these scam companies or services come in the form of domain name registration. These sites offer you a very attractive domain name registration package without giving you the services you really need.
How domain slamming works
Domain slamming is the practice of transferring your domain registry from one company to another. You may already have domain registration with a reputable and reliable company but a scam service might convince you to transfer to their domain registry instead. This starts with the registrar sending renewal or expiration notices for your registration via email or the mail. The company sending you these messages has no affiliation whatsoever with your current site’s registration. If you decide to renew your domain instead of your actual registration, then you will end up paying for unnecessary and nonexistent fees.
Signs your free domain name registrar is a scam
These email or snail mail messages charge you for specific renewal fees. The fees can reach up to hundreds of dollars. Make sure you do not answer any messages related to the “Domain Registry of America” or “Domain Registry of Canada.” Only respond to messages from your domain’s actual company. Double check with your domain company if they have sent you any renewal messages. If the domain service you originally obtained said it was for free, there should be no renewal fees.
The Internet has victimized many scams from people’s foolishness. Always double check the services you register for and the fees involved.
